valley falls

The revitalization plan for Valley Falls Heritage Park amplifies the site’s varied indigenous, industrial, and environmental histories while gently layering in new uses that foster more inclusive programming and activity. This design not only reflects the site’s industrial and natural history through careful conservation, story-telling and planting, but also embraces modern needs, offering spaces for new seasonal activities and community events that welcome and embrace the diversity of Cumberland’s residents. By thoughtfully incorporating the remnants of the historic mill, the park’s design respects the past while creating dynamic circulation paths, ecologically minded planting strategies, and quiet gathering spaces. Overlooks, plazas, and curated sightlines enhance the visitor’s experience, offering new views to and experiences of the Blackstone River and its richly varied edges. With a focus on flexibility and inclusivity, the park provides social spaces that evolve based on the community’s needs, promoting vitality, equity, and environmental resilience.

At the heart of the Valley Falls Heritage Park redesign is a commitment to community, connectivity, and inclusivity. The project not only revitalizes the park’s historical footprint but also integrates expanded access, inclusive experiences, and active spaces that can host a variety of programs. These flexible spaces are designed to function independently or collectively, supporting social gatherings, environmental education, and recreational activities. By creating intentional sightlines, tree plantings, and new infrastructure, the design elevates visibility and engagement throughout the site. In connection with the Amaral Building Community Center, the park supports a broader mission to promote wellness, education, and work opportunities, offering a space that fosters community health and environmental stewardship.
