Galveston wharves vision plan
IMPROVING PUBLIC ACCESS TO A WORKING WATERFRONT.
In collaboration with The Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation and Port of Galveston, Stoss developed a Vision Plan for Galveston Wharves that takes into consideration public waterfront access, future tourism, and port activity development plans. The 318-acre study area, operated by the Port but owned by a combination of public and private entities, is a vital economic engine whose parts are disconnected and which generally lacks opportunities for the public to visit and experience what is otherwise a vibrant and authentic working waterfront.
Major recommendations contained in the visioning plan include:
Creating green connectors that provide multi-modal access to the waterfront and the core Historic District
Developing a priority plan for expanded open space development in and around the wharves that build off the connectors, establish expanded waterfront destinations, and offer new sites for integrated development and tourism.
Connecting segmented waterfront promenades into a continuous welcoming accessible waterfront experience.
Protecting and enhancing existing historic and cultural sites including spaces that celebrate maritime history and port heritage.
Organizing sites and roadways that allow for port activity expansion and function while layering in safe and coordinated public access.
